Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, and at the same time the largest city in the country. Interestingly, the city is not part of the Buenos Aires province, it is an autonomous city next to it. Even more interesting is that the population of the Buenos Aires metro area is the same as of the province; however, the territory of the latter is considerably larger.
The metro area of the city is called Greater Buenos Aires and it’s made up of thirty so-called partidos. In fact, these are municipalities and around four fifths of these are urbanized areas, while the others are in the process of being fully integrated in the proper conurbation. This way the city has the third largest metro area in South Africa.
With the large population and area comes a cultural and social richness. The name of the city means “Good Air”, which is one of the priorities of the governance. The numerous cars emit huge quantities of contaminant gases. A number of laws and actions were made to help keep the green areas of the city as clean as possible and build further parks suitable for recreation and various outdoor activities, such as tango festivals.
Tourists who arrive in large numbers welcomed the forward-looking character of the city. Over five and a half million passengers were handled at the Aeroparque Jorge Newbery. This is a large number considering that this is only the secondary airport of the city with domestic flights. Just fewer than 7.5 million passengers arrived at the Ministro Pistarini International Airport in 2007.
The climate of the city influences the large number of tourists visiting Buenos Aires. The humid subtropical climate makes the Argentinean capital a perfect location for both summer and winter holidays. If you visit the city from May to September, you can expect the average high temperature to be between 15 and 20 °C, and lows over 7 °C. If you live in a place where the summers are unsupportably hot or just don’t want that much sun, this is the place for you. However if you want to lie on the beach and get a perfect ten during the winter holidays, while your friends are skiing, Buenos Aires is also the perfect city to visit. From December until March, don’t expect temperatures lower than 17 °C, and be prepared because during midday there can be more 30 °C.
This city differs from other South American cities, because beside the Latin American culture, here the European one is also present. You can feel the European influence in architecture, cultural events and performing arts and in just everything that happens in this tropical paradise. If you visit the city before 2010, you may find disappointing that the Teatro Colón, the leading opera house of the world, is closed. Of course, it’s only closed because of the extensive renovation of this beautiful building. When opened, it can host as much as 3,500 people. Beside the performing arts, painting, sculpting and other forms of self-expression are also well represented in Buenos Aires. In the many museums of the city, you can see enjoyable exhibitions about sacred art as well as about history, both local and international. Another form of performing art is also very popular in the city: the theater. The city of “Good Air” has the most theaters per square meters in the continent (South America).
Beside the performances of talented actors and respected musicians, nature is also a popular object of exhibitions. Jardin Botanico Carlos Thays de la Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires is the official name of the local botanic garden. More than 5,000 species of plants are housed by this seventy thousand square meter garden, including even five winter-houses. Because of the quality and significance of the gardens it was declared a national monument. Adjacent to this botanic garden you can find the world-famous Buenos Aires Zoo. Roughly, twenty five hundred species of animals live here, including almost a hundred mammals, and half of these are reptiles. You can also see numerous species of birds if you visit the zoo.
Music and dance plays a very important role in the life of portenos, the demonym of Buenos Aires. Due to the large number of French in the city and the visible European style the city has, it’s frequently referred to as the “Paris of South America”. The French immigrants were also those who created a new music style, with its root in the European music styles such as contradence, flamenco and polka, as well as Latin American style like habanera and milonga. Today this is known as the tango.
While in the city, you must attend an Argentine tango event. This was both a musical style and dance style, but today it is rather a lifestyle. It is an unquestionable trademark of the country, and subsequently of Buenos Aires.
The ever developing and never sleeping character combined with a great geographical position and favorable weather made Buenos Aires one of the top holiday destinations in South American and moreover in the world. According to a survey held by a renowned travel magazine, the large percentage of the questioned travelers named Buenos Aires as the most desirable location. It was ranked number two after Bangkok.
The city is famous for its nightlife scene. A very large number of bars and clubs are offering cold drinks and warm seats for the ones, who would like to spend their nights with friends or to make new ones. The Divino is a well-known discotheque. It is a very popular gathering place of the young. The leading musical styles are the techno and electronic, but you can find everything if you look for.
