Fort Smith is a city situated in the state of Arkansas and is considered to be the second largest city in the region. The city was founded in the year of 1817, as an important military post that helped in keeping peace between the emigrating Cherokee and the Osage Indians in the Indian Territory nearby. The city derives its name from General Thomas Adams Smith, who was the commander of the United States Army Rife Regiment in 1817.
