Quito or San Francisco de Quito is the capital of Ecuador, South America and has been situated in the north-central part of Ecuador in Guayllabamba river basin. With a huge population, Quito is ranked the 2nd most populous city of Ecuador and it also serves as the capital of Pichincha province. The city was founded in the year 1534 on the wrecks of ancient city of Inca and now, more than 2 million people reside in Quito. In the year 1978, Quito became the first city to receive the name of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre is the international airport of Quito located around 8 kms from the center of the city. It is the easiest, best and main way to enter into the city of Quito and several cheap flights to Quito are available from different parts of the world including Amsterdam, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Madrid, San Jose and New York. Several airlines serve the city well including Continental Airlines, LAN Ecuador, Santa Barbara, Delta Airlines, American Airlines and Copa Airlines.
If you are not able to find a direct flight to Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre, then you can also choose a flight to Galapagos Islands Baltra airport which is only at a distance of 35.8 miles from the city of Quito. Because this is a smaller airport as compared to the Aeropuerto Internacional Mariscal Sucre, you will not find the flights too busy for here and you will also be able to avail several cheap airfares to Galapagos from your nearest local airport.
As per UNESCO, Quito has the best preserved, least altered and largest historic center in Latin America and some of the churches in here are Cathedral of Quito, Church & Convent of St. Francis and the Church & Convent of La Merced. The hill of El Panecillo has been located in the mid-west of Quito city and a monument of Virgin Mary has also been located on the top of the hill. Metropolitano park is the biggest urban park of South America and is a great place for walking, running and mountain biking. La Carolina is a park located in the center of the main business area of the city and the people of Quito gather here on weekends for playing basketball, ecua-volley and soccer. The park also has a pond for paddle boating, a skate park for skateboarders and bicyclists and area for kite flying, snacking, running and aerobics. The La Alameda park has a Quito observatory in its center which is used for astronomy and meteorology.
Because of its closeness to equator and due to its elevation, the city of Quito has constantly cool type of climate with a spring like weather all through the year. There are only two seasons in the city: wet and dry in which wet season lasts from October to May and dry season is from June to September.
